Informational graphic for course assignment

This graphic illustrates knowledge distributed through a 200-level community college course. Each student was to build a graphic using an online program called Piktochart; this was one that I did to facilitate discussion.

Torrance Daily Breeze, Dec. 27, 2015 (Year-end packages)

For the Sunday after Christmas, all of the papers in the LANG chain ran stories about the top news events of 2015. The centerpiece display was a story about the local news events; Associated Press stories ran inside. I did the content packaging/design for the Daily Breeze.

Santa Anita Magazine

This was a special glossy 4/C magazine done for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group advancing the Santa Anita Park Winter Meet, which runs from Dec. 26 through April 10. I designed the entire magazine, and selected the art and came up with the illustrations. I also created all the "chartage" with the stories -- pulling out relevant information or adding supplemental information.

Website for country musician Dorsie Fyffe Jr.

In 2014, I began working with country musician Dorsie Fyffe. Jr., preceding the release of his 7" single vinyl record featuring the songs "Western Sky" and "Amazing Grace." I conceptualized, designed and built a website for him, which was dorsiefyffe.com (the site is no longer active). The site was designed simply and cleanly, letting the images and words tell the story. At one point, there was an e-commerce section on the website as well.

Los Angeles Daily News (newspaper), Dec. 4, 2015

This was our coverage of the day the FBI announced that the San Bernardino shooting was, indeed, to be considered a terrorist act. The Daily News, as the flagship paper of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, led the coverage for the 9-paper group, which includes the San Bernardino Sun newspaper. I designed the front page and subsequent inside pages on this day of our coverage. We wanted to give this big play, as it was the announcement by the FBI that changed the tenor of the incident to an international event.

Pasadena Star-News (newspaper), Dec. 2, 2015

This was the front cover of the Pasadena Star-News for Dec. 2, 2015. The centerpiece was a story on the Los Angeles Dodgers hiring Dave Roberts as manager. This centerpiece was picked up for all 9 papers in the Los Angeles Newspaper Group chain (LA Daily News, Long Beach Press Telegram, The Daily Breeze, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Whittier Daily News, Redlands Daily Facts, The San Bernardino Sun, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin). I added the box looking at minority hires in other sports leagues to give the piece some context. Other pieces on this page included a regional look at how cities were conserving water, and a report looking at a potential economic slowdown based on cargo numbers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Torrance Daily Breeze (newspaper) front page, Nov. 3, 2015

This was done on deadline for the "Daily Breeze" newspaper, which is the second-largest paper in the Los Angeles News Group (which also publishes the Los Angeles Daily News). This is the front, A1 cover. We had a localized story leading the paper this night, about a fire that destroyed some businesses in the historic downtown of San Pedro, and almost damaged the historic theater. I worked with the city editors and a graphic artist to develop a locator map, as well as get an impactful front-page photo.
